The police department in the city of Portland, Oregon is currently having a rather difficult time filling up a patrol designed to help fight against the current spike in the city’s murder rate.
There are 14 available spots on the Focused Initiative Team, according to the Wall Street Journal, and so far, only 4 of those spots have been applied for.
I’m not a genius, but I think a great deal of the hesitance to applying for this patrol has to do with how awfully the city of Portland has treated law enforcement officers over the course of the last year.
Lt. Greg Pashley spoke with the folks over at the Washington Examiner and while he didn’t specify an exact number, he stated that “not very many people applied.”
The team is a reincarnation of the Gun Violence Reduction Team, which was shut down last year amid the racial justice protests that included calls for police reform.advertisement — content continues below
“The chief’s office is now working on choosing sergeants first, then working to assemble the rest of the team. There is no specific date for the team to be formed,” Pashley went on to say, adding that there has not been any official assignments to the team yet.
Some law enforcement leaders say anti-police sentiment is responsible for the reportedly low interest in the new patrol.
“They’re demonizing and vilifying you, and then they want to put you in a unit where you’re under an even bigger microscope,” Daryl Turner, who currently serves as the head of the union that represents Portland’s officers, explained.
Portland Mayor Ted Wheeleer, who made the announcement about the unit back in March, has also created an 11-member community member oversight board.
In addition to the old requirements to join the unit, the new internal job postings include new demands such as the “ability to identify and dismantle institutional and systemic racism in the bureau’s responses to gun violence.”
Between June 2020 and June 2021, there have been 98 homicide offenses in Portland according to information from the police bureau.
“It is difficult to be sure exactly about the record, as our predecessors did not anticipate the keen interest in data these years later, and they seemed to lack methods for carefully storing and sharing that information. That is a number and year often cited, but hard to verify,” Pashley continued.
Anyone with common sense surely saw this coming, right? If you defund police and constantly vilify them, why in the world would anyone want to take up that job and defend the community from violent criminals? It’s a truly thankless job.
The left is out of their mind. Period. And this is more evidence of that truth.
